These pair of hoop earrings were gifted me on my birthday in 2019 by my friend rose.

He said as he walked passed us

I smiled and moved on.

The lady close to me was triggered .

Why are you upset I asked her.

He called you African she said ..

Yes, I replied . I am, and I see it as a compliment.

She looked at me in disbelief. Because many times certain people say this as a form of “insult” which I do not understand.

This happened some days ago as I went about my day.

This morning I woke up and I asked myself , was he trying to spite me or he was just saw me and decided to say something and that’s the only thing he could say .

Either way,

Dear African Lady

Yes you are African and you can never change that

You are beautiful, you are equal to all.

It is not degrading to be called African because that’s what you are.

Carry your head up high because you are art.

From your head wraps, to your braids

The way your skin shimmer in the sun

Your prints and nose will always give you away

Your light will always shine .

Remember,

Not everyone is racist ,

Not everyone is trying to degrade you.

A person can be genuinely intrigued by your looks , your prints, your cornrows,braids or head wrap.

Sometimes the world is not after you. So stop fighting yourself .
